Success for Münstereifel Junior Researchers at “Jugend forscht”

Bad Münstereifel/Leverkusen (tor). It is a never-ending success story. For the ninth time, a student group from Münstereifel’s St. Michael Gymnasium has secured a first prize at the “Jugend forscht” State Competition.

Andreas Bülow (20) from Euskirchen, Mike Schmidt (17) from Nettersheim, and Niklas Trzaska (18) from Roggendorf completely convinced the jury at the Bayer AG Communication Center in Leverkusen with their project “Paths to Terahertz Radiation” and were rewarded with the state victory in the field of Physics. Previously, the trio of inventors had received not only the first prize at the regional competition in the turbine hall of the Düsseldorf municipal utilities but also the Michaels Prize from the Hans-Hermann-Franzke Foundation, endowed with 3,000 euros.

Terahertz radiation refers to the frequency range between infrared and microwaves. Mike Schmidt, Andreas Bülow, and Niklas Trzaska developed, among other things, a novel “metamaterial filter” for electromagnetic waves that had not yet been described in literature. Additionally, they constructed a terahertz filter made from trash bag film and a quartz slide that was as effective as it was inexpensive. From a yogurt cup coated with nanotubes, they built an extremely sensitive Golay cell for the infrared and terahertz range. Completely by surprise, they encountered a previously unknown CO2 absorber while constructing this cell.

From May 21 to 24, the three will present their work, which, by the way, was mentored by “Mister Junior Research,” physics teacher Walter Stein, at the national competition in Osnabrück.

The success of the trio was not the only one for the Münstereifel junior researchers at the state competition in Leverkusen. In the Mathematics/Computer Science subject area, Peter Schmitz (18) from Arloff was awarded the third prize for his project “Self-Organization of Information.” Based on analogies between information theory, quantum electrodynamics, and thermodynamics, he developed an interdisciplinary concept for a new type of computer science. At the regional competition, he had received the first prize as well as the Special Award from the company ThyssenKrupp.

The St. Michael students also have another “iron in the fire” in “Schüler experimentieren,” the junior division of “Jugend forscht.” Kilian Günthner (12) from Stotzheim was able to repeat his success from the previous year, winning first prize in the Technology subject area as well as the Special Award from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) with his project “Construction of a Digital Reflected-Light Microscope.” As a result, he will participate in the state competition in Bochum from May 8 to 9.

Special Awards at the regional competition were also presented to the projects “The Redox Flow Cell” by Sebastian Klick (16) from Mechernich and “Can Earthworms Learn?” by Charlotte Assenmacher (11) from Kirchheim and Marike Sammet (9) from Arloff.
